Greetings, Commanders!

This is a pretty huge patch, with two main components: the High Tier Ability Selection and the Premium Unit balance pass.

As there's a separate foreword for the Premium Unit section below, we'd like to take this chance to thank everyone who tried out the High Tier Ability Selection and provided feedback. Many of you will see your suggestions reflected in the system below, so a big thanks to those who took the time to contact us.

High Tier Ability Selection

Units at Tier IX and X now have more abilities available to them! The units still have a limited number of abilities they can take into battle at once, but you can now customise the abilities and choose from a list of available abilities.

For those of you who played in the PTS, the two main changes you'll notice are that this system is now available to Tier IX, and that the available abilities are much more faction-orientated.

The abilities that are available are split into 3 categories: Default, Stock, and Unlockable.

  • The default abilities of units remain the same
  • Stock abilities are a collection of abilities that the units now have access to
  • Unlockable abilities require a certain other unit to also be unlocked before you can use it on the unit in question. For example, Palatini can use the ability Unite, but only if you've unlocked the Tier VI unit Equites
  • Some abilities are irreplaceable and you will not be able to remove them (e.g. Release on War Dogs, as this would literally break War Dogs!)
  • Some abilities also cannot be used alongside other abilities. For example, you cannot equip two aggressive strikes (but you can equip an aggressive strike like Vicious Strikes alongside a utility strike like Hamstring)
  • Along with this change, you can now reorder the unit abilities on the ability bar. This interface is not restricted to Tier IX and X, but is available for all unit tiers
  • You can access the swapping interface by clicking on any unit ability in the squad panel (along the bottom of your screen)

Balance

Pikes:

Though we stand by the general direction of the last patch's pike changes, they did result in some undesirable interactions in the case of encounters between pikes and units that could debuff Melee Attack or buff Melee Defence. We've made some tweaks to boost them back towards where they were pre-patch, while maintaining what progress we made:

Melee Attack bonus on Pike Phalanx increased from +15% to +25%
    • This might not seem like much, but due to the way Melee Attack scales it will make it much less likely that someone will be able to attack a pike phalanx and remain unscathed.
Pyknosis now adds +15% Melee Attack, but also reduces Turn Speed by 20%. Damage bonus reduced from +40% to +35%.
    • This will allow pike players to use Pyknosis as a counter to high-Defence commanders like Sulla, while keeping its strength roughly constant against other commanders.
Base Movement Speed increased slightly
    • Many pike players we spoke to said that they thought pikes were too slow outside of phalanx. While at this point we don't want to make any sweeping changes in this respect, we thought a small tweak - to bring them in line with spears - was warranted.
Minimum width for pike unit formations reduced from 20 to 16
    • Another common complaint from hardcore pike players is that the Formed Movement attribute makes pike movement unnecessarily difficult. While at this point we do not want to remove the Formed Movement attribute, reducing the minimum width of pike formations should make them a little less unwieldy.

Elephants

The most substantial issue that arose after the last patch was the fact that under certain conditions pikes could end up dealing no damage to a unit they were supposed to counter – elephants. This was largely due to elephants being able to boost their already high base Melee Defence to extreme levels through the use of Ad Portas. While it is good that elephants have options to mitigate incoming damage - even from pikes - being able to gain total immunity was clearly undesirable.

However, this has also long been an issue for non-pike units, who also struggle to hit elephants under these conditions. So rather than adding a pike-specific bonus vs. elephants, we thought we’d use this opportunity to adjust the balance of elephants more broadly. Given their high armour, health, and potential for reducing incoming damage via disruption, we felt that elephants did not also need to have such high Melee Defence. This change will be most noticeable when facing elephants who have their defence boosted through abilities.

Premium Units

For those of you who missed the Developer Newsletter, we have seen your feedback about certain Premium units being too powerful since the last Premium unit balance changes, and we have combed through the data and we’ve got an extensive set of changes ready for this release. I’d like to clarify that it is our policy that Premium units are balanced alongside all other units. Premium units exist to boost your progress and to give you a varied gameplay experience. Our stance is that they should be of equal power to a fully upgraded free unit. We want Premium units to be available as competitive alternatives to free units, so that their inclusion in any tournaments or ranked matches is not ever seen as unfair. For those of you with Premium units, we are currently looking into improving their value for progression and we’ll have more news on this soon. Also, if any Premium units are worse than their counterparts, they will be raised to equal power levels at a later date.

War Dog Changes

We appreciate that War Dogs aren't in the best place right now, and we're working on a bevy of long-term usability improvements. In the meantime, we decided to increase their Missile Block to bring it into line with other shielded infantry units. We also gave them access to two existing passive consumables, Feast and Swear Oaths.

  • Missile Block of all Barbarian War Dog units has been increased:
    — Broceliande Biters: 23 to 38
    — Fenrir's Followers: 25 to 41
    — Hound Handlers: 23 to 38
    — Seconded Strays: 21 to 36
    — Warg Warriors: 24 to 40
    — Wild Wolves: 22 to 37
    — Wolf Walkers: 24 to 39
  • All Barbarian War Dog units now have access to the Feast and Swear Oaths consumables

Ability Changes

Barbarian Phalanx:
    • Turn Speed penalty -60% -> -85%
    • Speed -50% -> -70%
Marching Column
    • Increased the Deflect debuff from -15% to -30%
Raise shields
    • removed the Minus Melee Defence and replaced it with -20% Speed
    • Add -20 % Weapon Range
Pyknosis
    • Added -20% Turn Speed
    • Added +15% Melee Attack
    • Melee Damage +40% -> +35%
Howl
    • Cooldown reduced from 70s to 45s
Strain
    • Range increased from 10% to 15%
Snipe
    • Damage reduced from 15% to 10%
    • Range reduced from 12% to 10%
Pike Phalanx
    • Melee Attack: +15% -> +25%
